POESIES ANTILLAISES 16

Original Lithograph, printed in 1972 on Arches paper by Mourlot Freres, Paris, published by John-Antoinne Nau. Edition of 250.

In 1945 Matisse created a series of images of exotic models from Martinique. These were as a homage to his friend, poet Charles-Antoine Nau who shared a great love of the island. Later that year he contacted his printers. Mourlot, to advise them that the works were ready to print and that he was very pleased with them, but due to various delays Matisse died before the images could be printed.

In 1972 the heirs commissioned Mourlot to print the works from the final corrected proofs which had been signed by Matisse.
